Consumer Watch: Two Things Can Be True
Consumer Access Watch says youth prevention and adult consumer clarity should be handled together, not traded against each other.
Truth one: youth rules matter
Alberta’s rules page sets an 18+ minimum age and requires government-issued photo ID for tobacco and vaping purchases, according to Alberta rules and enforcement. Consumers should expect those rules to be enforced.
Truth two: confusion helps bad sellers
AGLC warns that contraband products can lack tax stamps, required warnings, and inspection oversight on its contraband information page. When rules become confusing, unaccountable sellers get more room to pose as alternatives.
Consumer guidance request
- Publish a plain-language legal seller checklist.
- Tell adults where to report suspicious supply.
- Explain what changes if Bill 208 moves again.
